Intense Pulse Light Photorejuventation

What is IPL Photorejuvenation?

Olsen Aesthetics is proud to offer IPL treatment in Rockville, MD. IPL, or Intense Pulse Light, is a non-surgical skin laser treatment that reduces the appearance of, or eliminates, undesirable sun spots and age spots, severe sun damage, and clears noticeable vessels, resulting in a more even skin tone and clearer skin. IPL reduces the severity of acne and is the gold standard for Rosacea treatment. Specialized pulses of light target brown spots, sun damage, and vessels without harming surrounding skin.

Who is the ideal candidate for IPL treatment in Rockville, MD?

IPL is ideal for those patients with sensitive or pale, light-complected, sun-damaged skin. The risks are minimal. Currently, it is the best tool for the treatment of melasma, which is hyperpigmentation seen on the cheeks of many Asian or Hispanic women, who were previously told that nothing could be done!

At what age can I get IPL treatments?

IPL treatments can be performed on a person of any age. While younger people can undergo treatment with the consent of a parent, it is important that the patient be emotionally mature enough to tolerate the slight discomfort the photo facial may cause.

What should I expect from my IPL treatment in Rockville, MD?

When patients visit our office for IPL treatment In Rockville, MD, they can expect to sit back comfortably while wearing protective eyeglasses. Throughout the procedure, Dr. Olsen will answer questions or check in to ensure the patient is as comfortable as possible. After the procedure is finished, the skin will likely look red, similar to a sunburn. This can last for several hours. The skin will also feel sunburned.

Dr. Olsen will provide patients with clear skin care instructions to follow while their skin is in a state of renewal. Tips include avoiding sun exposure and exfoliating for at least one week after IPL treatment. During the time of tissue repair, small crusts may appear on the skin. These should not be picked. They will slough off naturally within a few days.

Will skin laser treatments make my skin more sensitive to the sun?

No. skin laser treatments, including IPL photorejuvenation, can be safely conducted at any time of year. Though sun exposure will not damage the tissue that has been treated with intense pulsed light, going into the sun too soon after the procedure could increase inflammation and the sensation of sunburn. Furthermore, sun exposure degrades the skin, so the results of IPL treatments and other skincare modalities may not last as long as they could with good practices.

Does IPL hurt?

We make our patients as comfortable as possible. Before starting your IPL treatment in Rockville, MD, we may apply a numbing cream to the skin to increase tolerance. The treatment is not painful but patients can expect to feel slight snapping sensations when the laser fires pulsed light. These sensations are short-lived and, before patients know it, the entire procedure is over.

Rosacea Treatment Results

Results may begin to appear within a few days after Rosacea treatment with IPL photorejuvenation, after the slight redness decreases. Sunspots and discoloration begin to lighten at this time but may need a series of treatments to achieve the desired level of improvement.

What are the risks of IPL?

IPL can be very safe when conducted by a trained, licensed professional. There are relatively few risks associated with this procedure. The side effects that are common to IPL treatment are typically limited to short-term redness and minor swelling. Some small capillaries and sunspots may become more visible at first before they begin to fade.

More severe complications such as bleeding and blistering are very rare, as are hypo- and hyperpigmentation caused by the laser light. To decrease the risks of adverse effects, it is necessary to be thorough and honest with the doctor about medical history and medications that are being taken. People who have skin cancer, have had keloid scars in the past, or who have an open lesion on the skin in the treatment area should not undergo IPL.

Are the results of IPL photorejuvenation permanent?

IPL results can be permanent but with a caveat. The skin is constantly aging so, despite any treatment to help it repair, most people will notice sun damage and other pigment concerns again in the future. This is more likely to occur if care is not taken to minimize sun exposure. To maintain the best results after an initial series of IPL treatments, patients are encouraged to touch-up their skin with repeat sessions once or twice a year. This interval of treatments can prevent new discoloration from progressing dramatically.
